The Inside Scoop: One Medical Sales Recruiter’s Take on the Job Search Process

The Inside Scoop: One Medical Sales Recruiter’s Take on the Job Search Process

Alan Goth is the Founder and Managing Director of Certitude Talent Solutions, a recruiting company specializing in connecting top sales and leadership talent with leading medical technology companies. Prior to launching Certitude Talent Solutions in 2016, he excelled for over 25 years in a variety of medical sales, business development, and executive leadership positions. His experience on both sides of the table, coupled with my experience as a LinkedIn and resume specialist, made for a great conversation about the job search process.

HERE IS WHAT HE HAD TO SAY:

What are Some of the Greatest Challenges Facing Job Seekers?

“On the hiring company/employer side, I see so many companies that want to put people in a box with a narrow job description,” Goth says. “Hiring managers shift and move on when they don’t. I think this is an unrealistic expectation.”

On the job seeker side, Goth sees a lack of focus or self-awareness as a challenge facing job seekers in his industry. “If you don’t have a certain skill set listed on a job posting, you must figure out how to get it to that next stage,” he says. “People are spinning their wheels.”

Goth works with companies and hiring managers with the goal of creating job postings that capture and distill the most important qualities and essential skills needed in a candidate.

What Are Your Clients Most Surprised By?

“Companies are surprised by the competitiveness of the market for top talent,” Goth shares, and notes they are sometimes stunned to learn that top people are being recruited by more than one company. “It’s sort of like dating,” he laughs, “but without a ring, it’s OK to keep looking.”

Because the hiring process often takes so long, it’s no wonder candidates get frustrated. As the middleman, Goth works to express the level of frustration on the candidate side and to get a real understanding of the timeline involved. He notes, “This way I can do my best to set expectations and maintain open and transparent communications, on both sides.”

What Advice Can You Give to Someone Making a Career Move, or Engaged in a Hunt Without Success?

Goth’s message is crystal clear. As a job seeker, you must be in control. “This is a time in your life that you must be certain and be able to articulate what you are after,” he says. “I need a clear sense self-awareness and the direction where you want to go — no fishing.” It’s frustrating, he notes, to speak with someone who is unhappy but doesn’t know what they want next.

What about people not having success? “Go back to what I said earlier about self-awareness —  and DON’T GIVE UP,” Goth says. If your job search is not going well, he notes, it’s time to get honest with yourself about why, by reaching out to trusted people in your life. “Give them permission to be brutally honest about your career, resume, goals, and skills,” he recommends.

Let’s Talk About Age Discrimination – What Are Your Thoughts?

“This is a topic that hits close to home for me,” Goth admits. “Even in my late 40s, when an opportunity I’d pursue didn’t pan out, I always wondered if age was the problem. However, while we all know age discrimination is illegal, it’s almost impossible to prove.”

In his field of medical sales and medical devices, experience is valuable, and candidates bring a lot to the table. The best battle plan to overcome age discrimination? Be able to articulate your value Click To Tweethe advises, and forge relationships with a handful of good recruiters who know your story and can sell it.

One or Two Tools a Job Seeker Cannot Be Without?

They need a good professional resume and a good recruiter. In terms of finding a recruiter, there are a wealth of resources available. Go on LinkedIn and job boards to see who is active and posting positions.

What is Next for You?

“It’s been a whirlwind!” Goth says. The company is growing and looking to hire new talent to grow the company and help more people during a very stressful time in their life. “I’m excited about what the future holds!”
